The act of ventriloquism is called “ventriloquizing”. And now you know.
August 23rd, 2007 @ 7:01 am

My younger brother and his wife are having a baby. Y’all know what that means?

That’s right, iron-on onesies!

But then I realized that I don’t really know what my brother and his wife are into. I mean, they probably wouldn’t appreciate a Rhett Miller iron-on for their little guy. And I doubt they’d know what “Future Blogger” even meant. I quickly gmail-chatted Jihan for some suggestions, since she’s close to my brother’s age. While I agree with her that Bette Midler is ultra fabulous, I don’t think my brother would agree.

I decided to e-mail my younger sister at work and see if she could think of any bands or TV shows that my brother and his wife are into. I patiently sat at my desk, photoshop opened, waiting for her response of some clever iconic image to turn into the perfect baby shower present for my new nephew.

Thankfully she quickly wrote me right back saying; “He is into Star Track, guys that talk for dolls, Star Wars, IKEA, and don’t forget, chickens.”

I know what you’re thinking.

Star TRACK? Guys that talk for dolls? Chickens?

What in the crap?

Not only do I not know my younger brother that well, I apparently don’t know my sister either. She crazy.

I thought about it for a minute before I realized what she meant is that he’s into ventriloquists. Which, to be fair to my brother, I’m not sure he is into. Sure he got a dummy for Christmas when he was 7. But that was a long time ago.

Chickens? IKEA? Let’s not even go there. Really, it’s for the best.

I think I was at an even bigger loss after e-mailing with my sister.

Thankfully she wrote me again and said, “I just remembered that our sister-in-law really likes ‘Little House on the Prairie‘.”

Much better. Now that’s something I can work with.

I sent it to The King for his approval. First off, he said I as a nerd. Then he said he didn’t think my brother and his wife would get the joke.

Please tell me that you get it. Please.

(And if you don’t, do you have any better ideas?)

I get the joke and I love it.

In line with his interests you could do:

    “Future Trekkie”

    “0% Klingon”

“Not a dummy” (with a picture of a ventriloquist’s dummy)

IKEAP = I Keep Eating and Pooping

This Boy Loves Laura Ingalls Wilder

I like my chicken pureed, please.

    That? Is hilarious.

Also, RE: chickens…I saw a great T-shirt on some site (Threadless, maybe) that said, “Guess what?” and then had an arrow pointing to the posterior of a drawing of a chicken. That, my friends, is pure comedy gold. :D

Your amazing onesie ideas are almost awesome enough for me to throw my whole 5-year-plan out the window and just start having babies right now in the hopes of getting a custom-made-by-isabel onesie. (Almost.)

Even after having seen the title of this post, it still took me a minute to figure out what your sister meant by “guys who talk for dolls.”

1- Nic is clearly EXTREMELY GIFTED when it comes to completely awesome onesie ideas…

2- I am SO PROUD of you for coming up with that kick ass LHOTP design! You’re my little onesie prodigy! Hooray!
(the only thing that could make it any more awesome is if you put the black lines across their eyes, but I don’t know if they’d get that, so it’s perfect the way it is…)

3- I heart your sister. Guys that talk for dolls? I’m still laughing…

    I must link to this.

P.S. So sorry about up and leaving the chat at the speed of light. My son cut his foot horribly and it was a mess!

Plus, we all know the awesome iron-ons are more for the parents anyway. Her mom was embarrassed and hurriedly picked up the shirt off the floor to inspect it. I waited to see her notice Debbie Gibson’s smiling face and wind-blown hair and get giddy about a concert tee for her little girl. Instead she gave a little forced laugh and then held the shirt up for the others to see. [...]
