In which the weekend becomes a blurMay 5th, 2008 @ 7:01 am
On Friday night, I sat down on the couch to read a gossip mag my coworker gave me. We had just gotten home from a night out shopping for microwaves. Babboo was in bed asleep and The King was catching up on “Law & Orders” from the week. After I had finished reading all of the latest celebrity gossip, I decided to grab a pencil and try the little sudoku puzzle at the back of the magazine.
After that, my memory of the rest of the weekend is a haze. I remember getting up early on Saturday to walk over to the bookstore to buy my own sudoku book.
I seem to remember a hazy grouping of numbers, one through nine only, of course. I also remember some grid lines. And maybe some eraser and pencil shavings.
I came out of my foggy haze last night after showing The King the basic rules of suduko. He took over my book and I was forced to step away from the sudoku and make some dinner for my family.
Tonight, after I get off work, I’m going back to the book store to buy The King his very own sudoku book.
There’s no way I can spend another night at home taking turns with my sudoku book.
So tell me, why didn’t any of you tell me how awesome sudoku is? Or how addictive?

It’s completely addictive! There’s another kind of similar puzzle called Kakuro that’s starting to be more popular, and I spent about a week straight of my free time playing that one before I had to cut myself off. My parents are addicted because of me, and my husband loved it until I got better at solving the puzzles than he did. He always likes games until I can beat him.

When I was pregnant with Evie, I had to be admitted to the hospital for a weekend for preeclampsia issues and I had all of my friends bring me Sudoku books to pass the time. After I got out, I was put on bedrest and I did NOTHING but Sudoko for hours and hours and hours. It’s possibly the most addicting game ever. It’s definitely top 5 at least…

Oh yes, I went through a Sudoku phase awhile back. Better late than never! You can also print lots of them for free online. I know you like free!

I am not patient enough to do sudoku. I get angry and yell and stab myself in the eye with a pencil.
Hey did you know that you can do sudoku online?

I love sudoku, but because I am cheap, I play it online at The Washington Post.

The most thoughtful thing my husband has ever done for me was grabbing my sudoku book on the way out the door to the hospital when I was in labor with Al. Once the epidural took effect, he gave it to me, and I knew (again) that I had chosen the right guy.

One word for you: www.websudoku.com. I am COMPLETELY addicted. It’s free, there’s three levels of difficulty and the computer keeps track of your best time and how you rank. I have wasted hours and hours of my life playing Sudoku. Welcome to the dark side, Isabel!

It’s addicting to some, but I am not one of them…..I hate numbers.
Have fun playing, and buy your husband his own book! FOR SURE.

When I worked in the school system, I would print Sodokus off the internet and put them on a clipboard so I could lean back in my chair and enjoy myself. Anyone who walked into my office thought I was doing paperwork. It was awesome!

Sudoku IS awesome and addictive! AS’s mom loves it, too, and we always sit and do our puzzles together when we visit. That is, like, the ONLY thing Mama AS have in common, so BLESS YOU, INVENTOR OF SUDOKU!

God help me, I am SOOO addicted to Sudoku!! Apparently, I’ve mentioned that a few times because for Christmas this past year, I got no less than 5 different sudoku books. From different people. They’re mostly done now, and I happened to see one in the clearance bin at Borders, so now I have a brand new 500 puzzle book! WOO!

I actually don’t play much, but I could easily if I had the puzzles at my disposal. I used to play online some. My parents…now they’re addicted. My mom bought a Nintendo DS for the sole purpose of playing Sudoku.

I’m addicted too. I took one book to the hospital with me when I had Hope and it got me through some contractions. I was so focused on the puzzles.

Because I suck at it, that’s why! (maybe I shouldn’t be trying the difficult puzzles to start with)
I’m glad you love it though, I know lots of smart people who can’t get enough.
