In which I wonder what it is I’m allergic to
March 17th, 2008 @ 7:01 am

It’s been a week since I got temporary crowns on two of my teeth. And yet, my teeth are still throbbing. Tylenol no longer seems to be working.

This morning I walked into my cubicle, took off my coat, started my laptop up and head my coworker exclaim, “do you know that half of your face is covered in red hives?!”

Yeah, I didn’t know.

small hives blog.JPG

The hives weren’t there when I was putting on my make-up before work. They weren’t there when I sneaked a look at my face in the mirror in the elevator.

Unfortunately the hives are on the side of my face where my crowns are. And since the crowns are causing me so many problems and are still throbbing my dentist thought the pain, the hives, and the temporary crows might be related. I’m not sure how or why.

But I’m off to see the dentist.

So tell me, what are you allergic to? (I’m allergic to red food dye, but be assured, I did not rub red dye on my face before work.)

I rock

OMG Isabel. That can’t be good. I went to the dentist this morning…and I have TMJ, that jaw issue. I clench my teeth all the time because my entire life is a big ball of stress. Call the whambulance, we got a whiner. Anyway, the dentist called me later to let me know that they had called my insurance company to see if they would cover a bite thing that is supposed to help the tmj, at least at night. It’s not covered and would be $600. I was like, ummm, nevermind. I’ll just monitor the situation and maybe get one later, but $600!!!! I’m planning a wedding and trying to save up to pay off the second honeymoon payment…I don’t have an extra $600 lying around…who do they think I am? I’m not made of money here, people! Are you feeling like maybe this could be a post for my own blog?? Yeah, maybe it will be. Anyway, my point is, the only hives i got were when I heard the price! I hope your hives go away soon and they fix the “situation.” I hate the dentist.

Ack! Hopefully it’s nothing. I’ve had that happen before, but not related to a dentist, just weird random hives. And I’m fine. I’m sure you’ll be okay.

I’m sort of allergic to penicillin. It won’t kill me, but it does make me break out in a rash, which I think qualifies it as a “reaction”, but not a real allergy. How boring am I?

Oh no, how awful - hope you get to the bottom of it all soon and it’s not a major problem to fix it!

I’m allergic to wheat - I never used to be allergic to anything… I even survived 3 months in Russia eating some things I would never dream of eating normally lol. But after an operation a few years ago I got really ill and after that every time I ate wheat I got such awful stomach cramps and indigestion (something else I’d never experienced ever before). I actually lost about 15 pounds one month without trying because I just couldn’t eat anything for days after eating it! I decided it wasn’t worth it and stopped eating wheat and lo and behold I got much, much better (even though my doctor told me not to cut anything out of my diet - sometimes I just don’t both listening to the “experts” :o ))

Oh dear! Hopefully the dentist can fix this problem. Are they itchy? I’m allergic to a certain medicine but other than that, knock on wood, nothing.

I am allergic to whatever the hell is in non latex bandaids.

At my parents’ home I put on my little brother’s Scooby doo bandaid for a shaving slip and two days later I had this awful itchy mess in the two parts where the non latex had touched my skin.

Yeah, tell that one to the dr when they ask if you are allergic to anything and they look at you like a FOOL.

It might be a delayed reaction to something you took when you got your crowns. I’m allergic to Cipro (the stuff that cures Anthrax) and any kind of medicine containing sulfa.

An easier question for me to answer is what am I NOT allergic to? Yes, sadly, I’m one of “those” people…

Good luck Isabel! I hope they find the problem!

Hmmm, let’s see. Penicillin, asprin, avacado, grapes, watermelon, honeydew, canteloupe. Dogs, cats, birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, dust mites, pollen, mold, dust, trees, grasses…..good lord the list goes on.

I really hope whatever it is that you are suffering from gets better before it gets worse. Allergic reactions are horrible, I feel for you.

Keep us updated on what the dentist said!

There is NOTHING worse than dental pain. It’s so easy to take the mouth for granted until it hurts - think about it: your mouth is instrumental in talking, eating, kissing…

I’m only allergic to one thing: latex. Didn’t know until the first time I had sex. Thanks, condoms!

I am hoping you are at the dentist already because my friend had a similar thing with her caps. Turned out she had an abcess and the poison in there was causing the red spots. They looked kind of like cold sores, hope you are ok!

I’m with the rest of the crowd (and you) thinking the hives are related somehow to the dental work. However - hives can also come from stress and you DO seem rather stressed about the crowns. So… let’s hope it’s stress related and not that you know, like the previous commenter pointed out - her friend was being POISONED by an abcess. LOL. I’m going to hope it’s much less dramatic for you.

    ;)

PS: Girlfriend - you simply must check out my latest post. Your husbands underwear will never be safe again. *grin*

Wow…I hope you aren’t allergic to the permanent crowns!

I had a terrible whole body allergic reaction to something last summer. My upper lip was three times it’s normal size. My entire face was swollen, I was slowly starting to look like Sloth from The Goonies. It’s too bad I don’t know what caused it.

My doctor used to think I might have a slight allergy to eggs. She only thought this because I was in my early 20s and had never had the flu. She said that there was some research that shows that people who are allergic to eggs don’t get the flu…which is good since they can’t get the flu shot b/c of the allergy.

Wow, that’s a fine bit of detective work on your dentist’s part. He’d better get that sorted out for you quickly. I can’t handle the thought of you in pain.

I’m in the pocessess of figuring out what is causing me this stomach pain I’ve been dealing with for the last year. I suspect garlic. I’m having it tailed. Only time will tell…

[…] Thanks to everyone’s well-wishes for the hives that covered my face yesterday. Thankfully they are now gone. The pain is still there, but no big red blotchy hives. The dentist wasn’t sure what caused them. Awesome, thanks doctor. Looks like I’m on the hunt for a new dentist in the Seattle area. […]

[…] My mom called me last night to make sure I’m adjusting to the pain from my crowns. She’s a good lady like that. My mom’s been a Mom for almost 36 years. She been a Wife for just as long. She has a career and hobbies and seems to know what’s up. I wonder how old she was when she got to this point? Was it before I was born? Or maybe after her forth, and final, child was born. Maybe it was a few years ago when the last of us got married, or maybe when her first grandchild was born. […]
