The steps to building the best stairway everMarch 10th, 2008 @ 7:01 am
A little after we starting construction on our new house, we met some friends at church that were getting ready to start construction on their own house. Lucy and Schroeder were close to us in age and had a little boy a bit older then Babboo. While The King does all of the work on our new house, Schroeder was just going to do about 50% on their house. Naturally The King and Schroeder became fast friends and were sure to keep tabs on the progress of each others projects.
Since we had built a house ourselves before, we knew (sort of) what we were getting ourselves into. Lucy and Schroeder didn’t seem to know as much as The King. Lucy assured me time and time again that they would be moving into their house much sooner then I ever believed they would. While they weren’t able to move in last September, as per their original plan, they are now living in their new house while we’re still trying to get flooring installed and counter tops made at our new house.
Last night was the first time we’ve been over to Lucy and Schroeder’s house since they moved in. We arrived in time for dinner and the Grand Tour. And dude, let me tell you, it’s freakin’ awesome. My heart stopped for a moment when I walked into their gorgeous kitchen. I sighed a jealous sigh when I saw their fancy new range. I literally tripped when I saw the view of the Puget Sound from their master bathroom. (Can you even imagine being able to look our over the ocean while taking a bath?) I wanted to jump in their shower and use their rainfall shower head and run my toes over the pebble flooring.
Basically being inside Lucy and Schroeder’s house made me that much more excited to move into our new house next month. While our house won’t be completely finished, it will be much better then the one bedroom apartment that we’ve long since grown out of. And for that I’m most excited.
We stopped by our new house yesterday so The King could show me the latest project he’s finally completed. This project was one of two things that I specifically wanted in the new house and I was happy to see how it had turned out.
May I present you with the super duper awesome floating stairs that The King designed and built:
(You must also note the super cool metal railings that The King’s dad built.)
And just to prove how extra sweet the stairs are, check out what they look like underneath (taken from the stairway going into the basement).

Dude, while I may have had the original idea for the floating stairs, based on a childhood dream, The King saw the vision and made it happen.
We’re one step closer (pun intended) to being able to move into our house.
The new house · The King · They're just my friends

So, will Lucy and Schroeder (not their real names) be expecting some visitors from Brooklyn to have a look at/try out their Awesome Bathroom? Heck, I don’t even have a WINDOW in my bathroom. I do, however, have a lovely mauve tile over Every. Single. Inch. Of. Space in my bathroom. Don’t be too jealous.
Also? Thems are some sexay stairs. I want to hear more about the dream you had when you were a kid. And how wonderful that The King can take that impressive memory and turn them into a reality in your home. Cool bean, dude.

Wow, that staircase is AWESOME. You must congratulate the King for me!
I’ve always wanted to have a mind like his where I can actually “see” and then create projects, do you see what I mean? I can never go into a house in construction and imagine what it’s going to be. Sigh.
Did you start packing some boxes yet?

I am so excited to see the rest of this house of yours. My dad and grandfather built every big of the house I grew up in, and there were lots of special things designed just for us. I’m sure yours will also have lots of those special touches…can’t wait for more pictures!!

The anxiety ridden Rhiannon would be scared to death of walking up and down those stairs. So, if I ever come over, remind me to take a Xanax.

I’m with Rhi! I have a super-dooper huge sized phobia of those floating stairs but DAMN! They are cool. Super cool. Congrats to The King for making your vision come true. You’re house is going to be awesome, I just know it!

Those stairs look INCREDIBLE!! I am so impressed with people who have the ability to just MAKE things, so the fact that your husband can build a house is kind of hot! (Not hot in a creepy, stalker way, just hot in a wow, you lucky girl way!)

Those stairs LOOK AMAZING!
And I am guessing that Babboo must be less obsessed with small wheeled toys than Noah is, because the first thing I thought when I saw them was a sobbing boy having just rolled his favorite train through the stairs and all the way to the basement for the 11 millionth time. On purpose, but mad because Mommy wouldn’t go get Gordon and Toby RIGHT NOW.

The floating stairs are awesome! How does Babboo feel about them? I was always scared of floating stairs when I was a kid, but maybe living in a floating stair home will desensitize him.

loving those stairs! you have great taste and the king isn’t too shabby himself. We have a set of floating stairs in our house too, but they don’t look nearly that nice. You’ve inspired me though!

WOW. The King should really be proud. I am w/several others that I might be a bit scared to go up & down them (I would worry my foot would fall thru- Is that irrational?)
Do you have other pics to share or will you unveil in another post? You must be so excited to move in.

And Lucy and Schroeder? Love it. I can’t wait for there to be a “little redheaded girl” mentioned in your blog!

I love those stairs passionately. Though they also scare me. Maybe I like to be scared.
I was always horribly worried that the floating stairs in my parent’s house had evil ewoks in league with devil skeletons, and if I didn’t run as fast as I could up those stairs, they would stick their bony or furry hands on my ankles drag me down to the dark place.

Those stairs are awesome. It will certainly help make the house open and airy! That is also awesome that The King was able to take your idea and DO IT! What talent!
p.s. am jealous of L&S’s pebble-floored shower with the waterfall showerhead.

Okay, stop reading my mind. Yesterday I was thinking, you know what name you don’t hear much? Schroeder. I’m not kidding.
I’m so glad you’re almost into your house. I wish I could come and help you move and organize things. I can’t imagine what it will be like to (a) spread out and (b) get all the stuff out of storage. Like Christmas in April! The stairs look terrifc…but they are kind of scary. I’m assuming no little Babboos can slide in between them? If not, he will have a fantastic time playing there! Sherman would be in heaven!
One random thing. “The Break-Up” was on TV last night and there is a lot of Old 97s stuff in the movie. I think we have had this conversation before. But I also think it’s R rated, so have you seen it?

Growing up I had the errr pleasure (?) of living in homes my Dad either built or bought an old house and completely gutted, tore out floors, added on entire sections, etc. I have memories (and pictures) of massive holes in the old wood floor covered with old road signs (we really did have a SPEED LIMIT 25 sign on our dining room floor) and when we were completely without a floor (picture studs every couple of feet wide with a gapping drop to the dungeon cement and stone basement below) Mom would pack up us kids (7, 6, 3) and went to Grandmas until he could build a floor.
We also tore down really old buildings (like a 100 year old school house) to get the wood for our home thanks to my Dad wheeling and dealing. So I have actually fallen through vents up to my armpits (when I stopped myself) from falling to serious harm in lower levels. LOL. Ahh the memories.
So even though it’s what feels like forever to get into your new house… just be thankful you are building the basics before you move in! LOL. Or Babboo would be possibly be learning tight-rope walking across beams at an early age. Hmmm, would that be a bad talent to have though?

Okay so I’m a total dork but floating stairs have always scared the crap out of me. I’m always secretly convinced that I will fall through them or become disastrously wedged between two steps. Even if there is no way on this planet I could fit through. I’m CONVINCED it will happen.
But. Yours do look cool.

[…] Last weekend, while having dinner over at some friend’s house the conversation turned to a discussion about The Itch. According to our friend (and apparently science) if you make it past the seventh year of marriage, you’re in the clear. As in, science has proven that the odds of a couple staying married after seven years goes up substantially. (Okay, so I don’t have anything to back this up. But hey, it was my friend who told us this. And he doesn’t lie. I don’t think.) […]
