More etiquette talk. But this time about phone calls.
September 25th, 2007 @ 6:47 pm

If someone calls your land line from their cell phone and you get disconnected, whose responsibility is it to call back?

I never know what to do in this instance. So I usually call the person back. And then I get their voice mail. So I call back again. And again, I get their voice mail. So then I stop calling. And then they call back and are all pissed that it was busy when they called you back.

Or better yet, I don’t call back and neither do they. And weeks go by and you’ve never resolved what you were talking about.

So um yeah, what’s the right thing to do? Who should be doing the calling back? And who have the right to be pissed about the situation?

And also, The King and I are meeting for lunch today down at The Market. Something that rarely ever happens.

Can you say all-you-can-eat-waffles? Oh yeah!

Wait, all you can eat waffles?? WHERE?!?

Oh, and I think it’s the cell phone user’s responsibility to call back since the disconnection is almost always the cell phone’s fault. So there!

In most cases like that it is the cell phone that drops the call. So, I think the cell phone user should be the one to call back.

The proper etiquette is for the cell phone person to call back, as they most likely dropped the call. If they don’t call you back, it obviously wasn’t that important. Additionally, I sometimes have the issue that I have lost a tower and it may take me 5 minutes for my reception to improve, so the land line caller won’t get me anyway. That happens to me everytime I drive from Chicago to see my family in Ohio. There is a big gap in service from AT&T (more bars in more places my a$$) in Ohio, so I am guaranteed to drop at least one call while I am there.

All-you-can-eat waffles! I need some of that action. I have been jonesing for some good waffles! :) I used to go for all-you-can-eat pancakes for $1.99 with my friends when I lived in OH. I need to find that action in Chi-town!

I also want to know where the all you can eat waffles are!

I agree the cell user should call back…but what do you do when you’re both on cell phones and the call is disconnected? I never know what to do!

I admit it, I only call back if I’m dying to finish the call. If I was kind of bored of the conversation to begin with (I hate talking on the phone), I’ll just let it go.

    Sorry, Emily Post!

Do you not have call waiting?? Girl, welcome to 1996 or some year around there. Get some call waiting and I think it would solve the problem. I’m not sure what the etiquitte is exactly, but surely not talking for weeks would not be Emily Post’s advice.

Hmmm…I have done it two ways. If it’s my bad and they get disconnected I call.

Or, If I am the one who placed the call, it’s me that calls back.

I agree that it’s the cell phone user’s job to call back, but I don’t think anybody should be pissed about it. It happens!

Cell phone should call landline. If it’s cell to cell (which happens frequently to me since I only use a cell phone) I can usually tell if it was my phone that cut out, so I call back.

The call thing? Well - whomever placed the call in the first place does the calling back!

She called you? Wait for her to call back.

Call waiting does not kick in WHILE YOU ARE ON THE PHONE DIALING A NUMBER….so the phone rings busy if someone happens to call you at that exact moment.
I’m with the majority, the cell phoner should call back.

    1. I don’t have a land line, so I don’t really know, but I think it’s the disconnecter’s job to call the disconnectee back, in general.

    2. YUM!

    3. I just opened the waffle maker we got for our wedding, so next time you come to DC I will make you all you can eat waffles too!!

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who thinks waffles in the middle of the day is acceptable. For some unknown reason, people get all judgemental when I eat waffles at a time other than breakfast.

I usually take the initiative to call someone back, reguardless if it was my phones fault or not. I usually wait about a minute to see if the other person calls first, but if one minute goes by and no call, I call them.

Yay for you and The King! I hope it was good!

Mike and i discussed the same thing the other day…
it’s so awkward when the phone gets cut off just before u say good bye.
hey anyway…i think call back and leave a message on the voicemail just in case.
