I wonder what my Fantasy would be? Maybe something with candy. And lots of soda. And maybe a nap.
July 16th, 2007 @ 7:01 am

Setting: Saturday night. My front room. The King has just returned home after a long day of working at our new house.

The King: What are you watching?

Me: Fantasy Island on OnDemand.

The King: I’ve never seen Fantasy Island before. What’s it like?

Me: I had never seen it before either. I don’t think I understand it.

The King: Why? What’s not to understand?

Me: I just don’t get it. These people come to an island to get their “fantasy”. So who are all the people in their fantasy? Where do they come from? Are they actors? Is there a script they have to follow with the fantasy-wisher?

The King: They are dressed as cowboys. What’s that about?

Me: Yeah, that’s confusing. Do they know it’s not 1862? How did Ricardo Montalban get these people to dress up as cowboys? Do they know they are in somebody’s fantasy? Are they being paid? I mean, a freakin’ fantasy would have to cost like 1 million dollars to pay for this old-time set and all of these actors!

The King: Maybe you’re thinking about this too much?

Me: Maybe. But really, are they following a script that Tattoo wrote? Is it magic? Is Ricardo Montalban the devil? Or is he a good guy?

The King: Yeah, I don’t know.

Me: Neither do I. Let’s watch another episode before we go out tonight.

The King: Okay.

Seriously people, I did not get this show. Something in my head just would not let me sit back and just enjoy the scenery. Oh right, it’s called A BRAIN. I had to figure it out. Except there wasn’t anything to figure out. It was so damn confusing. Is it real? Is it fake? Is it a resort island, or is everybody there to get their fantasy fulfilled? And is there anybody in this world whose fantasy would be to live in 1863 as a sheriff of a cowboy town? Or to be in a in a pageant to be The Most Beautiful Woman in the World?

Dude, that would so not be my fantasy.

So tell me, does anyone actually understand this show? And also, what would your fantasy be?

I was a total Love Boat & Fantasy Island junkie as a kid. Here’s how I made FI make sense: magic.

Ricardo Montalban was clearly a big master wizard of some kind, and Herve Villecheze was his kinda bumbling apprentice.

My fantasy would involve a lot of sleeping and maybe learning to do some cool adventury things

You know, I always wondered what the deal was with that show. The world may never know.

I think this show came on after “the Love Boat”, so our brains had been softened up enough we didn’t question things as much as you do.

Herve Villecheze’s paintings are worth quite a lot of money nowadays, and my fantasy is that I’ll find one at a garage sale for $5.

    Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!

I used to watch reruns of this show with my mom when I was off of school, and I understood it, but after reading your questions, I’m confused, too!

When I was a kid, we had a babysitter who loved Fantasy Island. It scared the crap out of me.

We didn’t get to watch TV (except Laura Ingalls!) growing up so I have no idea…never saw Dallas either. Sorry.

But my fantasy would involve wine, foot rubbing and a long long nap.

    Izzy,
I cannot believe that you’ve never seen it before! I used to love it! “Da Plane, Da Plane!”

The show always reminded me of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory– your fantasies are realized in this magical place.

Thinking about it now, I realize that the premise is a stretch… but it never bothered me before. I must have been a simple child :)

I used to love that show…now it just kinda creeps me out. My fantasy right now, would be just to lay on the island and have everyone cater to my every whim! I need a vacation (seriously)!

God, I loved that show with every fiber of my being. Seriously, I’m such a nerd like that. I like to think it was all magic and all of the fantasy “actors” were brought to life with fairy dust.

In my fantasy I would be head cheerleader of the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders circa 1979.

What is this show? I need to check it out. I love Ricardo Montalban because of my secret passion for Star Trek movies… so I’m pretty sure I’d love Fantasy Island!

I’m fairly certain the writers were on lots and lots of drugs.

That’s all I can figure out anyway.

Hellooo?? How soon your forget the gay cowboy duo of Seattle! Maybe their fantasy would be set in 1863. All you ever think of is yourself, Isabel. Jeeez.

I have never even heard of this show (oh, hi! I’m just here, living under my rock), but that picture scares the crap out of me. It looks like a nightmare where everyone is forced to drink the Kool Aid.

When it started people would come to the island to have their fantasy fulfilled and there was a set amount of money…and then it changed. Mr. Roark definitely had some supernatural stuff going on. Just as the show went on he seemed to have more and more powers..he’d use like a magic potion or something like that. That show used to scare the crap out of me…and I was really little.

Reading these comments, it just occurred to me that maybe Fantasy Island was trying to be the new Twilight Zone.

I think they were also trying to present some Life Lessons like: be careful what you wish for, be content with what you have, life is better now than in an 1863 cowboy town, etc.

I used to watch that with my parents and sisters every Saturday night after The Love Boat, so I was going to hassle you and say “You’ve NEVER seen that before??” and “What’s not to get?” And then I realized that even though I likely saw countless episodes and presumably they made sense to me at the time, I have almost no recollection of them and my adult brain would probably be just as confused as yours. So now I’m curious. (I wonder if Netflix has Fantasy Island on DVD…) ;-)

This so perfectly describes my feelings about the show; I don’t think I’ll ever understand it. Oh, and your fantasy sounds just perfect to me, only I’d swap out the candy for some Cheese Doodles.:)

Dude, you SO missed the boat back in the ’80s when it was on. LOL. It’s like trying to wear Hypercolor, pastels and Esprit to work tomorrow and getting away with it. You just can’t capture the magic of Fantasy Island now. ;P

I watched an episode of Shazaaam! last year and I was like, “This is it? This crap? This is what kept me riveted for half an hour when I was 7?” I’m still upset about how bad it was.

Oh my god, Fantasy Island is a magical island where fantasies come true. There aren’t actors and there aren’t costumes. The events ACTUALLY MAGICALLY OCCUR. And it totally came on after Love Boat, so that’s why it had viewers. But I remember being a faithful watcher, waiting for Tattoo to scream, “Boss! The Plane, The Plane!!!!!”
