You won’t believe who I saw for real this weekend. And who I missed seeing.June 4th, 2007 @ 3:53 pm
A few years ago, because of certain events, The King made a rule that neither of us were allowed to break. No matter what. The sky could be falling, the season finale for Lost could be playing, but we couldn’t not break this rule.
The King was in Los Angeles for work this weekend. While he was there he broke the rule.
So what’s the rule and how did he break it?
The rule is that if one of us calls the other one, you have to pick up. Seriously, no matter what. I had two very important things to tell him about and repeated phone calls resulted in me leaving mean voice mails on his cell phone.
Two very important things that happened to me over about a 15 minute period on Saturday afternoon.
The first thing happened while I was waiting for a dressing room at my local Old Navy. Since I had Babboo in his stroller, I had to wait my turn to use the handicap dressing room. History has proven that this can take a while. So I decided to sit down and wait it out. Yeah, except that when I sat down, there wasn’t a chair. Just a freakin’ hard cement floor. I tried super hard to catch myself before my butt hit soundly on the surface. But since I was wearing a skirt, that was impossible to do.
I hit the floor. Hard. My butt hurt, but my pride hurt even more. The nice 16 year old employees rushed over to aid me. I lied and told them I was fine. And then ran out of the store.
I headed next to the Gap. Before I walked inside I noticed a chap waiting to cross the street. He had two very fancy looking ladies with him. He was clearly over dressed for the hot Seattle weather. He looked as though he was unaffected by the heat. I realized very soon that hey wait, I know that guy!
I’m not sure if it was the blazer or the ascot that gave him away. Or maybe it was his beautifully billowed blond hair. Either way, he looked just like you would expect him to look.
Fabulous.
(In case you don’t know, that’s Austin Scarlett from Project Runway. But you knew that, right?! RIGHT!)
I stood there looking at him and trying to decide, in the few moments I had, if I should bust out my camera and risk looking like a total idiot to get a picture for the interweb. I decided to leave the camera in my bag and just stare at him for a second until he crossed the street and disappeared out of my life forever.
Plus the picture from his website is way cooler then any picture I could have gotten.
I was upset that The King didn’t pick up when I called. I wanted to tell someone. Anyone. I almost told the girl at the checkout in Gap that I had just seen Austin. I decided to refrain and just for The King to call me back.
Lucky for him he made it all up to me, and then some, that night. Okay, let me tell you.
I know it’s been a while since I’ve talked about it, but you all know about my deep and abiding love for one Rhett Miller (lead singer for the Old 97’s.). I don’t hide it.
Last week I received a message in my MySpace inbox from Rhett. He was going to be playing in Malibu, CA while The King was there on business. So while The King was hesitant to go alone, I pressured him. He made the 30 minute drive from LA to Malibu, bought his lone ticket and called me to tell me what the venue looked like.
It’s just a family restaurant. There can’t be more then 30 people here. I’ll call you later.
(later)
I can totally see Rhett backstage hanging out with friends. I think I could walk back there and nobody would notice. I’ll call you later.
(later)
Rhett’s on the stage doing a little sound check. I think the rest of the Old 97’s are going to be here. I’ll call you later.
(later)
All I heard on the next phone call was the sweet, sweet sound of Rhett singing and playing his guitar live. The King just sat there and held the phone so I could be there with him. I listened to about 3 songs this way and could even hear Rhett talking in between the songs.
Eventually I had to hang up and go back to sleep. The King called back later and it went to voice mail. I am now the proud owner of Rhett singing one of my all time faves, “Barrier Reef” on my voice mail.
When The King got home yesterday he told me that a guy even proposed to his lady-friend on stage after Rhett sang “Question”. Rhett even played his guitar in the background while the guy proposed. The King said it was so romantic he thought he was going to cry.
I can’t believe I missed it.
Good thing I have The King around to call me and let me be a part of it.
Thanks baby.

I love Youtube. It’s only been a few days since The King saw Rhett in Malibu but video is already up. Check it out.

Now that is one sweet husband. What a keeper.
I had no idea who that was. Project Runway? What is that?

I can’t believe you didn’t get a picture of Austin, though I agree that the photo from his website is probably better than anything you could catch on the street. But still. Your camera has been capturing such greatness lately!

OK, I think we may be secret long-lost twins. I haven’t been reading your blog that long, but in almost every post, you write something that is just like me. I LOVE Rhett. He is one of my absolute favorite imaginary boyfriends. I have written about my love of Rhett (and his magical, ever bendable hips) at least three times, though I’m too lazy to look for the links right now.
Also, the last time I saw him perform, he said he was no longer going to help facilitate proposals with “Question” anymore. “You guys are on your own,” he said. It was too much pressure for him, apparently. I see he’s changed his mind about that.

I’ve never seen PR, but I am guessing I would LOVE it, judging from that picture.
I was going to guess that you saw Rhett Miller. I was close!
I totally suck at celeb recognition. I either don’t notice them at all, or I can’t place them until later. Not like we have that many celebs here in b-more!

I’m very glad you didn’t make me guess who that guy was, because I have never seen Project Runway.
Also, I actually said “Awww” out loud at the image of The King holding up his cell phone at the Rhett Miller performance. He certainly did make things up to you in a great way!

I’m new to Rhett Miller, so I went to his site. Great music! He has a nice voice, and that little mole is soo sexy. Is there any “Good Luck Hair” growing out of it?
His look reminds me of Rufus Wainwright. I have a crush on him. Have you seen his DVD? I should loan it to you next Wednesday. (You’re a fan, right?)
Ohh, and you’ve got a darn good husband.

How sweet of The King to do that for you!!!!
I don’t watch Project Runway, so I wouldn’t have recognized him.

YAY King and Rhett. He totally made up for not answering the phone! Nice work…

I haven’t watched Project Runway… ever. I love America’s Next Top Model, but have to say I’ve never seen Project Runway. But that is totally too neat that you saw him!
I’m glad The King made it up to you.
Probably in the best way he could have! Too sweet!

I would have freaked too if I saw Austin. I wish you would have gotten a picture though, but I’ll let it slide this time, what with you just getting used to having a camera in your purse and all.

That is such a sweet long-distance love message from The King. What a good egg.

Good man you have there, Isabel! And fab taste in music, as well. I’ve seen Old 97s a couple times, but only as the opening act. (I might have mentioned that to you before, though.) Good stuff!
And seriously, y’all need to start watching project runway! I love that show, even though it’s near-impossible for me to say (darn mushmouth, r-w sounds trip me up every time).

What a cool story. ANd you are so much more giving than I would be. I’d be all, “if I can’t see him, neither can YOU”. See? You are so much nicer.
So sorry to hear about that fall. OUCH. And very cool that you spotted a celeb.

Oh, AUSTIN.
That is just phenomenal. He was so entertaining, and always had the best lip gloss, no?
Also, Rhett Miller…yummy. “Question” is one of my favorite songs ever.

Ow. The falling-on-your-ass-because-you assumed-there-was-a-chair-there thing? Been there, done that. Only I was AT HOME, so on the one hand it’s better because no one’s there to witness it, but on the other hand you’re AT HOME, so you should really know better.

What a nice husband you have. Your brush with Project Runway fame sounds more glamorous than mine. All I could do was stare at Kane when we went to his shop (without knowing it was his).

Austin … what a bizarre, perfectly-styled man. I would LOVE to lay my eyes on him in real life! I would also love to meet Malan Breton, who I adored for many reasons - but namely for his crazy accent and classic styles. I am so ready for the new season of Project Runway … the withdrawls are too much to bear!!

I’m so glad you told me who that was, because I would never have known, as a non-watcher of “Project Runway.”
Also, the King is AWESOME!

Have you ever wondered how Rhett, after all these years, *still* looks like he’s barely old enough to vote? Super cool of your husband to be so cool. What’d he think of the opening band?
P.S. I saw Michael Douglas at work yesterday. I made eye contact ’cause apparently I’m creepy like that.
