It’s as if my head is shaped like an egg, or somethingMay 4th, 2007 @ 7:01 am
There are a few perplexing things in my life. I’m sure we all have things that we find perplexing. You know, like how in the world was The Bridges of Madison County such a huge hit? That book sucked and I hated it. You know what else I always find perplexing? How in the world does George Costanza keep getting cute girls to date? That so would never happen in real life. Perplexing, yes.
Another thing is this whole head scarf craze going around right now. Not only are the head scarves cute, but they hold your hair out of your face, so also useful. I like that. Oh yeah, and I also am a slave to the everybody else is doing it syndrome. I went out and bought the required head scarf a few weeks ago. I raced home to try it out. It didn’t work. It’s like my head is shaped the wrong way, or something. I tucked my new head band away and thought about sending to my blog best friend. She has a better shaped head then I do.
Last night in the Target $1 bins I found a head band that looks like it’s a head scarf. I figured for a $1 I would try.it.out.again.
Today’s outfit was chosen to accentuate my new ($1) purchase. I put a few little curls in my hair and plopped on my new head band/scarf. Dude, it just doesn’t work. I swear, my head is the wrong shape for any added fabric.
It’s very perplexing.
It was also too late to make any changes to the hair as I was already late for work (but not late enough that I couldn’t take a quick picture to share with the interweb.)
So here I am at work with my hair all looking dumb. And not I’ve got a huge headache from the binding head band. And it’s only 8:28 in the morning and I’ve got a lot more where this came from.
Yes, it’s very perplexing why this look just doesn’t work on me but looks so great on all the girls I see in downtown.
I’m such a poser.
The thing that makes today a little brighter is the flowers sitting on my desk. A coworker brought them in for me a few days ago and they are still quite lovely.

Notice how the vase totally accentuates the lovely colors in the flowers. It’s as if they were made to go together. Also notice the org. chart for Frema’s Tragic Love Friday. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check it out.)
But what’s that behind the flowers, Isabel?
I thought you’d never ask.
For Christmas my Dad made everyone in my family a calendar. You know, the kind that has all the birthdays and anniversaries on it so you don’t have an excuse for missing them. The first of each month is a treat for me. It means I get to flip the page on my calendar and be surprised at which member of my family I’ll get to stare at all month. Since April was the month of Babboo’s birthday, I got to look at pictures of him.
I came into the office on Monday and excitedly flipped my calendar over. Only to find this:
In case you can’t tell, those are all pictures of me. That’s right internet, I have a calendar hanging in my cubicle that has no less than 5 pictures of myself on it. (The biggest of those pictures taken in a local Baskin Robbins mere months after giving birth. Classy Dad, thanks for including that one.)
I can only imagine what my coworkers think of my ugly head band and my embarrassing calendar.

I hate to break it to you, but that scarf looks fabulous on you. You have no right to complain about an odd-shaped head because you are totally working this trend, baby. WORKING. IT.

I’m with Frema — the headband/scarf looks HOTT on you. And I think that calendar is truly adorable.

I’ve been through the exact same thing with the scarf/headband trend. The headbands are either too tight and give me a headache or the scarves don’t stay on or make my hair do a weird poofy thing in the front. It’s just a shame.
And….doesn’t everybody have multiple pictures of themselves on their desk at work?

I also think the scarf headband looks good on you.
For 2008, I think you should make a calendar with pictures of yourself for every month. Extra points if all the pictures are Glamour Shots style!

You’re rocking the headband look. Maybe it’s just one of those things you have to get used to. For me, it was wearing my hair down instead of pulling it up into a pony tail.

I love the calendar idea and perhaps need to steal it. Remind me when Christmas comes around okay?
Here is my head scarf secret, okay? You have to wear it so that it doesn’t actually pull your hair back. keep your hair still in the down position, almost like it’s just tucked behind your ears, and then carefully place the headband on top. No pulling or tugging of any hair should occur. Am I making any sense at all? Here is a photo example: http://flickr.com/photos/jaynet03/220604597/
As for the headband-induced pain, yeah…that sucks. No cures for you there, sorry!

I have a tip on the headband/scarf wearing thing. Don’t put all your hair behind the scarf. Comb down some “bangs” or just hair in the front, and the tie the scarf behind those. You can still tuck that hair behind your ear so it won’t bother you, or even pin it with a bobby pin if you have to. I am a big fan of scarves/headbands and I think this is the secret to making them look adult, rather then 5th grade-ish. Hope it helps

I agree- the headband looks fabulous on you. Thanks for thinking of me (and thinking that the headband would look good on me, but I can promise you — it would not. I have ear/headband issues)!
The calendar is hilarious. I’d keep it on April or June (or at least behind the pretty flowers) so your coworkers don’t think you made a whole calendar de Isabel!

I think the scarf looks good and look at you all posing for the camera and lookin all rested early in the morning!
If someone took a pic of me first thing in the morning, holy hell is all I’m gonna say.
Also, if there was ever gonna be a pic of me at Basket Robbins (oh how I love thee) I would be shoving ice cream in my mouth!

I think you look great in the headband! Maybe you just aren’t used to seeing your hair that way and you just feel funny about pulling it off? Seriously, I love the look! And you are so NOT a poser!
I agree with Janet, try her little headband secret, that is what I do too, and it works!!!

Is it your birthday soon? Or did your dad just decide to make May official Isabel month, and does your coworker just like to give you flowers? Either way, I declare it Official Isabel month, so there. Now you can tell people that’s why all the pictures are of you. Problem solved. You’re welcome.

I have the same problem with headbands. They give me headaches almost as soon as I put them on. And I love the “All Isabel, All Month” calendar. I can only imagine how cool your co-workers think you are.

You know who can totally pull of the headband look? Christar. Yes, she looks great in them, but she doesn’t wear the scarf style ones… just the nice thick ones that I can’t wear because my head’s so fat they crack when I put them on.
You look cute. Don’t give up on the $1 scarf.

I think you aren’t seeing what I’m seeing, because I think you look awesome in that scarf! I haven’t worn the scarf style headbands, but I do have lots and lots of the regular headbands. In like every color to match every outfit. I love them!
So does that mean it’s your birthday this month?! Or is it for Mother’s Day?

Aww, Brittany is so nice! But seriously, I’ve seen her in headbands, and she looks hot in them. I love her hair. She has great hair.
Yea, what happened to King Fridays?

The head band looks adorable on you! I say go with it. I will say, however, that I can totally empathize with the head shape issue. I love the head scarf look, but I can’t do it. It won’t stay on my head. It always slides back because my head is funny shaped I guess. I was at Target yesterday and saw the head bands you are referring to, so maybe I need to try one of those. Now that I know EVERYONE is doing it, I can’t NOT have a scarfy head band!
By the way, love the calendar AND that you have Frema’s org chart on your wall. You are a classy chick!

Yes, is your birthday this month??

I like teh scarves too, but I have a problem keeping things on my head too like that. I think I have a small base of the head so it all slips up. oh well!
I love the calender! It is actually a great idea, but I am not sure I want to be looking at myself…lol…

I think you look Ab-Fab and you should bring your headbands to BlogHer as you OWN that look.
I need a copy of the TLF flow chart. For real. I’m getting lost and I cannot have that!

The scarf looks cute! Also, it was only a dollar so it would really be a shame not to wear it. [channeling inner frugal grandma]

[…] Some of us have vowed to liven things up. Hence my co-worker giving me flowers last week. Something else he’s trying out is a series of commands for us to follow. When he says “roll out” we are all supposed to roll our chairs out into the hallway to chat. When he says “prairie dog” we are all supposed to pop our heads up from our cubicles to see what’s up. […]

I am totally late in commenting on this, but I just have to say the head scarves don’t work for me, either. I can’t pull off the cute casual hippie-ish bandana skull scarf thing, either. And in the early 90s, those stretchy fabric headbands that were so popular didn’t really work for me either. So whatever causes your head not to work with any added fabric, I have the same problem.
And I was saying just last week that I didn’t understand why George Costanza got all the girls. Believe it or not, I used that as justification for going out with a short bald guy, though. Never again. And the one I went out with was even employed.
