I’m really into you right nowJanuary 30th, 2007 @ 7:01 am
I’m really into my little sister right now. I mean, I’ve always loved her. But I’m really liking her lately.
(I can just see The King rolling his eyes at me saying this.)
My sister is 7 years younger then me. That doesn’t seem like that much now, but when I was 20 and she was 13 it’s was a million years apart. As much as we are alike, we’re very different. As much as we look alike, we really don’t.
We never really paid any attention to each other growing up. She was just my bratty sister that I had to take with me everywhere. Thankfully Marci also had a bratty little sister that we had to take with us. It wasn’t ideal, but it worked.
As I got older I longed to have a good relationship with my sister. At that point she was a teenager and not really into me. I remember asking her if she wanted to hang out with me and my hott lady friends. She said, “Why would I want to hang out with a bunch of old ladies?!” I didn’t get it. She didn’t get it.
I moved away to Seattle before she even graduated from high school. I wasn’t there when she met the guy she would later marry. I wasn’t there to see her try out for Miss. SmallTownWhereI’mFrom. I wasn’t there to see her graduate. I wasn’t there when she got engaged. I wasn’t there to attend her wedding shower. I wasn’t there to help her plan her wedding.
I was there to help decorate for her wedding and to watch her get married to her awesome husband. I even smiled in the pictures, even though I had just gotten my braces on. I was happy for her and her husband.
But still, she really could have cared less. I was still an old lady to her.

Now, she likes me. She really likes me. She calls me all the time. She wants to know my opinion about things. She asked for advice. She values my thoughts. She even shares things with me. Personal things.
I lap it right up. I think it’s great. I love the attention from her. I love talking to her on the phone. She makes me laugh. Yes, she’s mildly abrasive, but she’s my sister. I’ll put up with it.

(I tried to not cover up her nose piercing or our matching glasses with the black-out. I think nose piercings are cool.)
She calls me to talk about her job, she calls me to talk about the latest news from the O.C., she calls me to tell me what color her hair is these days. Dude, sometimes she calls me just to ask about a recipe. (She calls me a lot.)
I like to think that age has brought on wisdom and she’s realized just how cool her older sister is. That maybe she finally understands that I might just know what I’m talking about. That maybe I have been there, done that and can help her along the way.
I’m pretty sure the reason she likes me so much lately is because she likes what comes along with me:
(I wish that I could better put into words my feelings for my sister. I love her. Love is too weak a word for what I feel - I luuurve her, you know, I loave her, I luff her, two F’s.)
They're just my family

I love the shot of you in braces. How fun! (But not really, right?)
I also love my siblings, too. I wish I had more time to spend with them. But I’m also happy to miss out on some of the Drama.

you two have the same smile!
I know what you mean though, I have the major sister love too. But we are the opposite because we were one grade apart, went to the same college, we even were in the same sorority! But now we live so far apart it’s sad. I do hope we get to have babies together though. Wouldn’t that be the best!
Does your sis have kids? Is that why she loves little B so much?

It’s funny how much more we appreciate and understand our parents and brothers and sisters the older we get.
You could’ve put my brother and I in a room together for 24 hours as teenagers and we wouldn’t have said two words to each other, but we are completely the opposite now.

I am nuts about my sister! When we were younger, I wanted to shoot her. I’m sure the feeling was mutual.
Now, we’re all like BFF.

I wish I had a sister. Wah. My mom promised me that I was getting one, and then guess what — she went and had a boy. The nerve. (I love my brothers — both of them — very much!)

I am jealous! I only have one sort of mentally distant older brother… I would have loved a little sister!! Well, maybe. In theory.

I hope my sister and I are like you gals one day. We are definitely getting there. We are only 4 years apart, but when you are teenagers, 4 years is a lot. She is about to graduate from college and I’ve noticed that she calls me for advice sometimes and actually values my opinions. I hope when she enters the “real world” that we have more in common and become closer, because really, I only have 3 years of real world experience on her. It’s not THAT much.
You and your sister are a cute pair! I can feel the lurve.

Aww, how sweet! I think as my younger brother and I get older, we also grow closer. We’re not quite there yet, but I hope someday we will be.

Great post!
This one hits home for me, because my sister is 5 1/2 years younger than me, and for so long she was SO little in my eyes. I always loved her, but we couldn’t really talk about stuff. Then all of a sudden she was nearly grown and we could relate to each other. Now we’re super close, and I love every second of it!

What a lovely post! I am 13 years older than my sister and yet it’s more like 3 years.
We talk about boys, makeup and clothes… I think having such a large gap between us means that I am always cool to her, which is cool to me of course.

That’s so sweet and sentimental. I always wanted a sister, but my big brother will just have to do! When we were growing up and arguing or whatever, my mom would always tell us that someday we’d be such good friends. We’d roll our eyes, but it really did happen.
And actually, once he got married several years ago, I got a pseudo-sister and I love it! And now that they have a baby, I want to go visit them ALL THE TIME. I can see where your sister is coming from…

Makes me wish I had a sister. I am not at all close with my twin brother…
My husband has a younger brother with an 8 year difference. I am hopeful he will respect my husband soon…

It is so crazy that I hated my sister so much growing up and now we are so close. I love it. It’s wonderful. Yay for sisters!

That is great! My sister is 3 years younger and only recently have we been finding common things that we share. It’s so nice to see a sister relationship like yours.

[…] My younger sister got married eight months later. This is the sister that would fight for Biff to the death. She would stab me in the back to show her love and devotion to him, even though I’m the one that will actually pick up the phone when she calls. Biff won’t. […]

[…] My parents caught their plane and headed home. By the time they got home Biff had called and told my younger sister he was gay. This part upset my parents. Since my sister was still a kid and living under their roof, they had wanted to sit down and discuss this with her. They had wanted to talk openly and honestly with her, keeping in tune with the beliefs they were raising her with. She took this to mean they were upset with my brother being gay. Which, I believe, wasn’t their intent at all. […]

[…] My younger sister and her (awesome) husband are in the process of buying their first house right now. They are young and haven’t ever done anything like this before. Buying a house is a big deal. It’s also something The King and I done once or twice. They are signing the papers for the house next week and moving in the week after that. She is nervous, but excited to pack up their crappy apartment and move into a house. She called me to tell me how the inspection went and called me to tell me about the loans going through. She’s really kept me in the loop with her new house. […]
