King Friday - now with more insanity
December 8th, 2006 @ 7:01 am

Hooray for Friday’s and for The King. This week instead of The King offering prizes, he needs your advice pertaining to all things “job interview related”. So please, help him out!
——————————-

should i call? should i not call? should i call? its tough. its almost like asking some girl to prom that is way out of your league.

(ok. when i went to prom, my girlfriends mom wouldn’t let her go with me. i was a bad influence or something. plus, i
think she was like 13 so it was probably illegal too. anyway, i went with a friend and we took dates that were just friends so it was pretty low key. we had a maroon limo. pimp. to make a long story short, the limo driver took us to red square on the UW campus and did doughnuts in the car while we all bounced around in the back seat. the fun was over when he hit another parked car, and left the scene of the crime. he then accidentally locked the keys to the RUNNING automobile inside the car, and abandoned the limo in the driveway of my parents house. i called a tow truck and went to bed. honestly, its a long story and if i told you the whole thing, you’d agree that it was a way better prom than getting bombed and screwing some cheerleader. ok, maybe not better than sex with a cheerleader now that i think about it… (i guess i should stop thinking about it…)

so i have this job interview which goes pretty well. i wear a suit. i look like a non-homo version of that doogie howser guy on ‘how i met your mother’ on CBS. she says she wants me to come back for another interview and we’ll be in touch.

i send the thank you email. a week goes by. i call and follow up. ‘glad you called…’ and yeah, let’s have you come back in. but the people you need to meet are all out for a week. so i wait. i call again almost a week later and this time leave a message. next monday will be two weeks. the others are back in the office on said monday so maybe she’s waiting on them. and i understand that. but i’m going crazy feeling like a teenage boy not knowing if i should leave it alone and stop bugging, or call again and show some more interest.
no friggin’ wonder these good looks never got me much play in high school. i’m an insane person. plus. my current job has to go. GO i tell you. i cant take much more of it.

now what? any advice? i seriously hope that the person that interviewed me isn’t reading this. if so, i’m only semi insane and it does not in any way impede my job performance.

(next week its back to some friendly competition with the grand prize being my O.C. pen…)

    I want the OC Pen!!!

That is a tough one. Being a supervisor in a profession that brings people back for interviews I would tell you not to call. I would wait another week and see if they call. If they do not call, I would then call again and aplogise for taking up her time, but you wanted to check on the progress of the 2nd interview. 1 because you are extrememly interested in the position and 2 because if they are not going to do a 2nd interview at all, then you need to know so you can persure other oportunities.

The person who has sat around waiting to get calls totally feels for you and would want to call too, but the person above still thinks you should wait.

Hope that helps and make sense. This is just my opinion.

Since you’ve e-mailed and called, they know you want the job. I would wait it out until they are ready to make contact. Don’t be That Guy!

I agree with Frema. You have already done your part. Now you should wait it out. I hope you hear from them soon.

If I win the pen, I’ll let you keep it Isabel… right after I write a post that makes fun of The King for like The O.C.

Oh and King? WHAT FREMA SAID.

I would follow up with a good, old-fashioned handwritten note.
In the age of cellphones and email, a handwritten thank you note goes a long way. And it will make you stand out. Say something along the lines of how much you enjoyed meeting with so-and-so and that in the time since you first met, you’ve had time to consider what a great match you are with such-and-such company and boast about your qualities, yaddayaddayadda.
Plus, it’s less face-to-face immediate. It shows that you care enough to take the time to send a hand-written note.

I would call her up 5, maybe 10 times today, probably a few times over the weekend too. Just leave a few messages saying that their company has already missed out on two weeks of the most ass kickin employee they would ever have and if they really wanted to cut their losses they would ask you to start Monday and just write you a check for the past two weeks to make up for it. When they say “see you Monday”, say “Yes you will, and I hope to have a cookie bouquet waiting on my desk when I get there, thanking me for taking this job.” Also let them know that you will refuse to sign any sexual harassment policy or crap like that because you like to do things old school. I promise you this will work.

I almost forgot, when they ask for references, say “Hell yeah I got references” and refer them to this:

And say “Chomp on that reference!”

Holy crap you did doughnuts in Red Square? That is hardcore.

It doesn’t hurt to be interested and eager. I had to bug the crap out of the job that I just got. I would call on Monday since the week is fresh and they can schedule something.

The person applying for the job is always more excited/anxious for it than the people hiring. They will take their sweet time. Hope it works out for you!

My advice for the day is to wait unti next week and then give a call about mid-week. Just saying that you wanted to check in and let her know that you are still interested in the job. When I got this job, it took them a month to get back to me. I just kept checking in and she knew I was really interested. Same thing just happened to one of my friends. My rule of thumb is wait to call until you feel like you can’t take it anymore, but add two days to that. Good Luck! I completely understand the “I can’t take this job anymore!”

It’s sort of a crapshoot. I work for a company that has so much red tape, it takes no less than a month (sometimes 6 weeks!) for them to get back to interviewees. And they get annoyed when people call too often.

But my brother just got a job by basically calling/emailing every week until his was hired.

Liz’s advice sounds really, really good. And so does Rob’s, if Lizzy’s approach doesn’t work! I totally understand NEEDING to get out of a job… ugh!

Patience, my friend, patience. My hubby has gone through this recently….

Someone he called FOUR weeks ago finally called him back… In that time he’d already found an even better offer!

I worked in Recruitment for 2 years and work for a online job board now. Unfortunately sometimes it just takes a long time. One of my friends recently started working with us and apparently the turn around time for her was 2 months, fingers crossed it is shorter for you!

Haha, I just read Rob’s comment, I think it could work, nothing like a batshit crazy candidate.

I’d either do one or the other, so I’m not much help.

Option A: Keep on, keep on, keep on, keep on ringing all through the night.

Option B: Play hard to get - let them come after YOUR wonderfully mad skillz, yo.

DO NOT CALL AGAIN. I recently was conducting interviews for our admin. assistant position. There was this guy I interviewed and he sent like 3 e-mails. The first one was appropriate, but the next two sounded so desperate and were just plain annoying. Ultimately we did not hire him. I’m sure they love you, just wait it out! :-)

    (wow, I sound very bossy)

Sing telegram…with a Babershop Quartet…singing “I want the job, I want the job” to the tune of “Oh Christmas Tree”
That has “hire me” written all over it and it’s festive - booyah
