The King would like to hear from youOctober 27th, 2006 @ 8:01 am
Today we bring you The King’s latest post. We missed him last Friday. (He was too sick to post? He doesn’t yet know that us bloggers sacrifice our bodies for blogging.) If you missed his last post, go here.
————-
we’ve got a pretty limited budget, and about 5 nights on our hands in november. its time for a small vacation to give us a chance to recharge before the final push to finish the house.
see, i’m a better person when i’m on vacation. and you laugh at that, but its true. i need to get away and see things. but this time, i’ve been so busy with the house project that i haven’t had time to give this much thought.
so we need some suggestions. keep the following in mind:
- we have a baby. a 6 month old.
- we aren’t rich. we go budget all the way.
- we want to relax.
relax can mean have some fun doing some stuff and/or have nothing to do but sit naked on the beach and watch the wind blow. we actually stayed at this place in mexico that was basically a gilligan’s island grass hut about 30 feet from the water. there was absolutely nothing to do during the day except sit and cook in the sun. it was great. the food was great. it wasn’t crowded. you could even get naked on the beach. (it took isabel a little while to get brave enough, even though we were by far the best looking people there.) it was a little primitive, but awesome. check out cabanas copal in tulum mexico. if you have the chance, go for a few days. if you’re really ready to relax, stay a whole week. but don’t bring food into your hut. the mice/rats aren’t afraid of people and they WILL come looking for a treat.
we’ve also been over to europe several times. we’ll likely head over again in march 07. i don’t know if 5 nights is enough time to get all the way over there this time though. we like to wander around, and basically just see what the people that live there see. i’ve seen enough Jesus paintings to last a lifetime, so we don’t really do museums and stuff so much. just the normal life, eat out, shop and walk around town kind of stuff. berlin, paris, rome, milan… we’ve been around a little and know how to find out way. and we’re content with los angeles, san francisco, new york, stuff like that. just seeing what there is to see.
- we’re up for almost anything once.
so if you have had a great vacation recently, or just one that you will never forget, let us know. we’re open to suggestions. what’s it gonna be? hawaii? st. maarten? iceland?
let’s hear your suggestions. if you come up with the best idea, you win a prize.

Luke and I have been discussing the idea of a short vacation. I would love to spend a weekend on the East coast and visit a fun city. I’ve been watching a lot of Murder, She Wrote reruns lately, which took place in Maine, and that sounds pretty relaxing.
Of course, Indianapolis is also a very nice city. We have a children’s museum, zoo, native american museum, nice restaurants, a really cool mall downtown, and a blogger who would get such a kick out of meeting you guys!
Good luck making your decision!

We just did a long weekend in the North Fork of Long Island–wine country.
But since you’re on the left coast, maybe a nice weekend in Napa and a day or two in San Fran?
OR: come to New York City! Henry and Babboo can play!

I want to visit Boston and New York soon. We just got back from a cruise in the Caribbean (and went to St. Maarten!!). It was wonderful.
If you’re going soon, I’d say go somewhere WARM! It’s always nice to get away from the colder weather.

Well, I just took this great vacation to this wonderful city. It was called Seattle.
I’m guessing you’re looking for something a little more exotic than the town you live in every day. Hawaii is fantastic, I have been 3 times… and I’m from a family that believes you should never go to the same place twice, because there’s a big wide world out there to see. There are beaches, mountains, lots to do if you want to, or nothing to do, if that’s what you want. It’s really paradise… but it’s pricey if you want to stay in the popular areas. I know Isabel is a champion bargain hunter, though!
I also have had great times in Whistler, Vancouver, and Portland. I’m not sure about how they’d be with a baby though, since I don’t have one. Portland has the nice riverwalk to stroll, lots of restaurants and parks, and the beach and valleys too see nearby.
I love vacations. Can’t wait to hear what you pick!

I second the vote for Napa. Except go to St. Helena or Sonoma or Healdsburg or anywhere BUT Napa instead. Napa is a tourist trap. The weather is Perfection in the bay area these days. (November might be rainy though…)
Other lovely Bay Area locales… Santa Cruz, Marin, Berkeley, and of course San Fran.
AND you could swing by Mountain View and visit ME!!!!!

Washington, D.C. of course! But it’s all museums. I’m not sure you want to see how real people live here. Unless it’s people like Janet or Amalah.

All I’m gonna say is stay away from Memphis!

I hear Tulsa, Oklahoma has many good things to offer… like… free stays at Casa La Carrisa… and a free petting zoo full of nothing but 4 Boston Terriers. The food is outstanding and there is also plenty of free booze. Of course we wouldn’t be giving any of that to the baby. He would be too busy getting his neck kissed and loved on by the owner.
Did I mention FREE ROOM AND BOARD AND FOOD?

I personally LOVE NYC, but that many subway trips wouldn’t be fun with a stroller. How about Miami or Key West??? I know you’re on the other side of the country, so it might not be too practical. It’s so much fun though…you can spend most of your time lounging and there’s always interesting things to do and people to meet.

Ok..not sure what kind of budget you’ve got for this trip, but I just got back from Eastern Europe. I went to Budapest, Prague, and Vienna.
Prague wins, hands down for the type of vacation you’re looking for. You don’t have to do much except wander around and eat. Each restaurant has got it’s own cool architecture and atmosphere. It’s hard to explain, but I felt like I was “in” the art just walking around, rather than having to go to a museum to “see” the art. Tix are so-so to get there, but getting around and costs are super cheap once you’re there.
Or, just go to a b&b somewhere in Maine. Especially now with the fall foilage. Very, very nice. Tahoe…Vancouver…
I could go on. Hmm…come to think of it, I need another vacation myself! You got any suggestions for me?? ;-P

A cruise is a really good idea because they are always looking to fill the cruise ships and I’ve had good luck getting good rates. Best part, they are all inclusive. Lots of relaxation, fun and sun and there is a ton to do and see on the ship itself nevermind all the stuff you can do while in port. Since you’re on that side of the continent, do an Alaskan cruise….

Look around online as some of the travelocity type sites or even some of the hotel web sires. Many times you can get great last minute deals. We had friends that got a wonderful package to hawaii with airfair included over memorial day weekend a week before they left.
Vancover could be nice, I bet you could find a decent room, You are close and travel costs wouldn;t be that much an dyou could head over to Victoria too.

I’m from Eastern North Carolina and I think that the best place on the planet is the Outer Banks. You can do the Outer Banks on a small budget - especially in “off season.” Start at Hatteras or Atlantic Beach (where I’m from) and work your way up the OBX. See all of the beautiful lighthouses, meet some truly fantastic folks (the locals are always in a better mood during “off” season - you’ll meet true Carolinians not so many Jersey types - not that there’s anything wrong with that). The locals will take you in for sure. There’s no place like it on Earth. Really. My fave is Ocracoke Island - stay at the Island Inn and eat at Howards. Lots of history in those parts. Down East people are sweet as sugah, hunny. It’s definitely a far cry from Paris or New York City - but it’s so serene. Kitty Hawk is where the first flight took place - Manteo is where the settlers landed (The Lost Colony). Eat some Eastern NC BBQ while you’re there. Here’s a link for more info: http://www.goouterbanks.com/
Let us know what you decide.

Go back to Mexico! I know my experience at that resort wasn’t great but it sounds like you’ve got it all figured out over there. Your Baby genius will be fluent in Spanish by the end of the trip!

Katie is right. I’m only a few hours from the Outer Banks and it is a wonderful place to unwind and very child friendly. And did I mention, I’m only a few hours away?

I just saw this super cheap flight to the cayman islands, all you have to do is get yourself to Detroit.

[…] thanks for all of the suggestions on places to go on vacation. they all sounded like fun, for the most part. i think we’ve settled on something easy: vancouver, canada (although hawaii may still be in the running.) its been a while since we’ve been up there together and its fast and cheap and we’ve been so many times at this point that we can either go out and goof around, or do nothing in the hotel and enjoy ourselves either way.
