You get what you pay for -or- cheap hair cuts aren’t so badOctober 24th, 2006 @ 7:01 am
I can’t smell the cat pee in the apartment. The King could still smell it this morning.
The King: Sniff around the place and see if you can find any more pee from Preston.
Isabel: (mouth drops. Thinking to myself:) does he really think I’m going to walk around and sniff out the cat pee? Because I’m not.
The King: There might be some more. I swear I can still smell it.
Isabel: (Still thinking to myself:) Seriously, I’m not sniffing around for no freakin’ cat pee.
I think it was a fluke. A one-time deal. I tried to ignore it when ShellyNoir e-mailed me and told me that Preston may be dying of some rare liver disorder. While I appreciated her offer to go with me to the vet, I just don’t buy it that he might be sick. Pretty much, I’m thinking he’s still mad about the fact that there is this little person around that didn’t used to be. Sorry Preston, the baby is staying.

My cousin graduated from beauty school last Saturday. I was invited to go to her school to celebrate her last day with balloons and (free) pizza. Who am I to turn down the chance to show my support for family? I mentioned the free pizza, right? Because I will not lie, it was the motivator.
Did you catch that? My cousin is not a beauty school dropout.
I decided that since I was going to be at the beauty school anyway I might as well get a hair cut.
A hair cut that cost $8.50.
I have a hard time with an $8.50 hair cut. While I don’t enjoy paying $60.00 for a hair cut, I feel better knowing that a $60.00 hair cut is (most likely) better than one that only costs $8.50.
Am I right?
Plus I wouldn’t feel good about taking a fussy Babboo into a fancy salon. But I do feel good about taking him into a beauty school. I figure for an $8.50 hair cut he can be as fussy as he wants.
Am I right?
Babboo wasn’t fussy at all. In fact the lovely 18 year old student who cut my hair was so in love with him that she gushed “I want a baby so bad!” I replied a little too smugly when I said, “no you don’t! They are a lot of work and you are just too young.” I need to work at keeping my thoughts to myself.
I decided to treat myself and pay the extra $7.00 to have her style my hair. Mostly because I couldn’t attend my cousin’s party with wet hair. While I will admit that the $8.50 hair cut was just fine, the $7.00 style was not fine.
Alyse my stylist, was way too into the product she used. She was too busy talking it up to realize she was putting too much of it in my hair. Way too much. My hair ended up all greasy and stuck to my face. Never a good look. Well, never a good look for me.
I would go back. But next time I won’t pay the extra $7.00 for the style. What I will pay extra for is the Gray Magic that I saw listed in their price list. At $2.50 it sounds like something I can handle. I’m not really sure what it is but count me in.

I’m sorry your hair didn’t turn out well. I always feel like I can’t decide if I like a ahir cut or not unitl the next day when I wash and “style” it myself. And, of course, by style I mean let it air dry and then put it in a ponytail.

And no picture for us? Next time you spring for a $8 haircut and/or some Gray Magic, please pop your camera into the diaper bag.

I go back and forth. I used to only go to the cheap-o $10 haircut place, but then I moved, and they were too far away. Now I have found a place that is great and only charges $75 for a cut AND highlights, so I am sticking with them for now. I think you do get what you pay for with haircuts (and products), so if you have nice, straight, naturally healthy hair, you can get away with a $10 haircut. If you’re like me, on the other hand, and have curly hair that is BFF with the East Coast humidity, you need to have someone who knows what they are doing and is willing to spend more than 10 minutes on your cut.
And I agree with HollowSquirrel, we NEED a picture!

My sister is currently in Beauty School (she’s also not going to drop out). She does not let anyone else there near me. I’m surprised you didn’t have your own cousin cut your hair (unless she went to school for nails and not hair for which I would understand). I’m way too afraid of Beauty School haircuts because of an tragic one I received while in Junior High. But I trust my sister to not fugly me up. And actually we do most everything from her house so that I don’t have to pay for anything. Yay me!
Although I am pretty darn tempted to go to the beauty college and get one of the cheap pedicures. It’s kind of hard to mess up a pedi right? Unless they give me fungus or staph… but I’ll play the odds. Pedis are fun!
And yes… pics please!!!

Sometimes I am tempted to go to beauty school. Is that weird? I love playing with hair! However, that Grey Magic stuff sounds a little odd to me. But I am not a judger! I say try it out.
Also, I am having MAJOR cat pee issues at my house that I do not even want to go into (because then I will have to FACE THE PROBLEM AND EWWW I HATE IT) but let me just say that a feel your pain. Times about 25.

The cat pee is stuck to the King’s nostril hairs. I am sniffing now and yes, my room smells like cat pee from 3 years ago.
It’s like the phamtom pee smell!

My mom owns a salon, so I’ve never paid for a haircut in my life. She always says “you get what you pay for” when it comes to hair stuff, and I think that’s generally accurate. I’ll never forget the haircut my husband got at Fantastic Sams right after I met him where the girl accidentally put vents in his sideburns…it was awful.

My mum gets her hair coloured (cheaply) at a training place somewhere out here, and she keeps hinting I should go there for my haircuts. I’m JUST not that game!
And agreed - must have pics!

I used to have shoulder-length hair for quite a while. About four or five months ago, I cut it quite a bit shorter — a little less than chin-length. I’ve been keeping it that short since then.
Just two days ago, a boss noticed for the first time and commented on it. To give him the benefit of the doubt, he isn’t my direct boss and I don’t typically have a lot of contact with him. We were in a meeting though with several other people who were well aware that I’ve looked like this for almost half a year. What do you say to a comment like that? Do you try to explain that it isn’t new and unintentionally make him feel bad or do you just say thank you and bask in the awkwardness that follows? I went with the awkward route, but then again, when do I NOT go the awkward route?
Here’s to hoping that everyone oohs and ahhs over your new ‘do… and not five months down the road.

Not Liver. Kidneys! Is he eating all right?
I went to a certain training school downtown once and it took this poor girl two hours to cut my hair. I was too mortified to tell her I only had an hour for lunch. Oh, the horror, the horror.

I NEVER like how anyone styles my hair, after a $60 haircut or an $8 one. But I would definitely check out the Gray Magic if I were you!

My sister Ryan is in beauty school right now and will graduate next spring. One day I’ll let her cut my hair. But not today.

I got my haircut at the Aveda training school here in Seattle. The haircut and color were great, and I got it all for $50. The hassle was it took almost 4 hours to get it. I was in the chair all afternoon. I guess you get what you pay for. Great post.
