Exactly what I was thinkingJuly 6th, 2006 @ 7:01 am
I’m still trying to talk The King into watching Lord of the Rings with me. He is doing all he can to not have to watch it.
This week he even started to lie about it. Wednesday morning he told me that he watched the first one the night before, after I had gone to bed.
The King: So, I watched Lord of the Rings last night. It was so good.
Isabel: Really? What was it about?
The King: Frodobagginses. (he says this as one word)
Isabel: What does Frodo do?
The King: He goes on a journey to get rid of the ring.
Isabel: Did he get rid of it?
The King: Yep. The movie was good.
Isabel: He got rid of it in the first movie? All by himself?
The King: Yep. Frodobagginses is funny.
Isabel: You know he doesn’t get rid of the ring until the last movie, right? And that he has to get rid of it in the Fires of Mordor.
The King: Oh yeah, I meant he almost got rid of it.
This morning he told me he watched the second one last night.
The King: I liked the second movie even better. That crazy Frodobagginses.
Isabel: Who are the Two Towers they talk about in the second movie?
The King: You know. So I’m not going to tell you.
Isabel: It’s the wizards’s Saruman and Sauron two sides. But it always bugged me how close those two names were to each other. It confused me a little.
The King: That is exactly what I was thinking when I was watching it.
Isabel: You know that we don’t even have the second movie here at our apartment?
The King: Um. It was on TV.
(rolls eyes…)
I guess this means I can just give up all hope for him ever actually watching these movies with me.
Good thing he’s so cute.

He sounds cute, but why the LOTR avoidance? Come on King! It’s GOOD!

That’s hilarious! I have to say, I was very confused by the details in LOTR, too - and I’m sure it had everything to do with those two names being so similar… I guess his aversion to LOTR is like mine to Star Wars. I just do NOT want to watch it.

Sometimes I can understand the avoidance to really popular movies and books that EVERYONE loves and EVERYONE has read and EVERYONE wants to talk about…such as my avoidance with Harry Potter. Well, ok, to be honest, it was mainly because my mom was bugging me about it, and I just needed her to STOP with the Harry talk. But I caved, and I’m SO glad I did.
I think the King will eventually come around and actually see the movies. Someday. And then he’ll really want to talk about just how HOT Aragorn is. Or maybe he’ll want to talk about something else.

That is too funny. I’m with the king on this one. I do not want to watch those darn movies. I have no interest in those or the harry potter’s. Other major famous movies that I haven’t seen include:
The Godfather
Lethal Weapon
Die Hard
Indiana Jones
All of those above… I haven’t seen any of them… none of the sequels either.
Of course my fiance hasn’t seen E.T. and he refuses to… so that’s a way bigger deal than mine.

I felt the same way about the LOTR movies, and the new Star Wars when they came out… they’re so LONG. And wierd. I used every excuse to get out of watching them. And then when I was finally forced to watch them…. I loved them. Lurrrved them. I even went out and read The Hobbit. And watched the old Star Wars from 60s or whenever the hell they were made. Also loved them, although I was glad we got a hotter Luke for the modern ones.
Because I had such low expectations, I probably liked them even more than I would have if I just went in neutral… so, Mr. King, you should really give them a chance. That Frodobaggins! He so crazy.

I’m with the King. I refuse to watch LOTR or any of the subsequent versions. I also pass on Harry Potter (children’s books, people, children’s books!) and the DaVinci Code (book AND movie). Sometimes it feels good to have cultural principles.

Yeah, I think I’d throw in the towel too. I would probably have liked the movies but I had an english teacher in high school who MADE us read the books. She was such a be-otch. She LOOKED like a habbit actually and much time was spent debating amongst students as to whether she had hairy feet — or not.
So sorry, I’m sort of with the King camp. heehee.

Don’t shoot me but I must say I’m with The King. Never seen any of them and for some reason I just don’t care to even though, “I promise they are SO good!”

I LOVE Harry Potter and LOTR and don’t understand when people boycott hot books or movies just because they’re popular. I can understand not liking the subject matter or the actors or whatever, but “on principle” doesn’t sound like a very good reason. And those in love with HP know they are no longer children’s books.

My husband does this and it’s most irritating. Great job on calling him out. The Frodobagginses? Love it. Mike does it with just about anything I suggest.
Ooh, and I use this same template for my site. I have learned all the tricksy ways of modifying it and if you ever so desire changes, I can help!

That sounds oddly similar to my attempt to get my boyfriend to watch Harry Potter. He actually gets Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films confused. Beyond frustrating, but thank god he is cute too.
