I’m watching youFebruary 27th, 2006 @ 8:00 am
I’ve worn a watch since I was about three years old. I’m not exaggerating. Time is very important to me. (Although I’m not sure why, since I rarely have anything actually scheduled.) I’ve sort of had a love affair with watches since about elementary school. So much in fact that for most of 4th and 5th grade I wore a watch on both wrists. Purely because I thought it was cool. I realized it wasn’t so cool when I would have to actually explain to people who asked why I wore both watches, “it’s because it’s cool. Sucka.”
Yesterday I had to leave home early (I was taking the ferry over to Vashon Island to go to Church there with a friend) and didn’t realize until I was checking my watch to see if I’d missed the ferry that oh my goodness, I don’t have my watch on and I don’t know what time it is and did I miss the ferry?
I was very fortunate to be able to simply look up and see the ferry. Thus ending me worrying if I had missed it. But the rest of the day was a blur without my watch. Was Church too long? Did it go over its scheduled time? Do I need to leave now to catch the return ferry? What time is dinner?
See, I was a mess. And all because I had forgotten to put my watch on for the first time in about 20 years.
When I got home from Vashon Island I put my watch on immediately. My heart began to slow down, and I felt relaxed. It was a good feeling.
—————-
This morning I walked into work, put my bags down, took my coat off and settled in for a long day at work.
Then I noticed it.
I had forgotten my watch. Again.
I know there’s a little clock on my laptop here at work. But I can’t trust it. Not like I can trust my watch.
I think I need someone to e-mail when it’s time for lunch. Oh, and when it’s time to go home tonight.
Do you think you can do that?

Weird…I’m obsessive about my watch, too, but only in the sense that it’s a familiar piece of accessory that I wear everyday, like my beloved heart-shaped gold earrings. It just feels weird to be without it if I forget to wear it one day.
I never panic, ‘tho with it’s function. I just figure there’s other means of getting the time: my cell phone, my laptop clock, the office clock, or another person with a watch.
I wonder why you’ve suddenly forgot to put the watch on today?

I HATE not having a watch on. I don’t think I even look at my watch much (between the computer, phone, cell phone, and blackberry, the watch is kinda obsolete), but I feel completely naked and a little light on the right side of my body.

I completely understand… I’ve got a clock, a cell phone, a computer, and 7 people within shouting distance of my office, but if the only time I trust is the time on my watch. All other times are WRONG. And how do I know if the clock didn’t just happen to stop if I can’t verify it with my watch??
So sad…

Funny, I’m the exact opposite. I never wear a watch. In fact, this is going to sound strange, but every watch I’ve ever worn has broken within a few months. It’s not like I buy my my watches at the dollar store or anything. I’ve owned a variety of watches, some were even a couple hundred dollars. But all of them have stopped working. I used to get them repaired and was constantly having to change the batteries, but now I’ve given up. If I wear a watch, it’s a wind-up watch, but mostly I just rely on my trusty cell phone.
Oh, and my sister and grandmother have the exact same problems with watches… Strange huh?

Must be that pg brain. I wore two watches on the SAME wrist in elementary school because I couldn’t decide which I liked more. I haven’t had a watch I liked in a few years so I’ve come to trust other clocks/cell phone.

I also so obsessed with time - but more with dates. I need to know what I will be doing next week and next month and if possible even next year… Come to thing of it, maybe that’s why I’m so stressed out right now. Other than moving to Cologne for a couple of months, I have NO PLAN!!

I feel completely lost without my watch because I have no sense of time without it…

Great post. I’ve always had about 5 watches in my rotation. I always need to know what time it is. And even if I don’t have a watch on (usually at home)and the hubby asks what time it is, I’ll say, “It feels like its about 2 p.m.” Sure enough, it will be within a few minutes of whatever time I guess.
As for forgetting your watch… Pregnancy hormones most likely. I forgot stuff all of the time when I was pregnant.
Oh a friend of mine had a little boy about two weeks ago. I visited her on Thursday. He was so sweet and tiny. I thought of you and your little one…

Just FYI, by my calculations you get to go home now or I guess in an hour, depending on what time you work till, but still, I just thought I’d help you out there.

OMG, it KILLS me that hubby doesn’t wear a watch. He says he can just check his cell phone. What??
The *only* time I’m not wearing a watch is when I’m asleep or in the shower.

You know, I forgot to wear a watch about three years ago and haven’t worn one since. Odd.

It will change when you have the baby. I used to be addicted to my watch…but after having kiddos…I have not worn a watch since. I think it was cuz when I wsa breastfeeding…or snuggling…I didn’t want that damn hard thing touching such soft soft skin.
I have not worn a watch in 5 years…it’s lovely!

Now this is exactly why I stopped wearing a watch for sometime. Anal Virgo that I am, it consumed my life and I needed to break free from its super powers of mind control.
thanks for stopping by my blog and for the nice comment! You’re welcome back any time.

It’s funny, I was a watch wearing fool my entire life (hello, SWATCHES!), but once the battery in my Timex ran out a few years ago, I never got it fixed and I haven’t worn one since. I usually use my cell phone clock.
