A tourist in my own city
November 14th, 2005 @ 10:05 am

When I was a kid my Mom loved being a tourist in our own state. We went to Zion National Park every year. My Dad loved to visit the town of Grafton, where “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” was filmed. They used real houses in the filming and you could totally go and tour around them. This picture is of us in 1988 in the school house where Katherine Ross was a teacher in the movie. Eventually, some drunk high school kids burned the whole town down.

I remember one time when I was about 19 we went to the State Capital and did all the usual tourist things one weekend. It was great. We visited historic sites, the zoo, and ate in local type restaurants. It was cheesy, but fun. And really, who does stuff like that? I think my Mom had great for sight in having us do that. (I also feel like she made us afraid to go out of our comfort zone and visit “new” places, but that’s another post).

This brings us to this past weekend. The King and I woke up on Saturday morning with.nothing.to.do! Did you hear me Internet, NOTHING. No trim to paint, no doors to sand, no yard to weed, or leaves to rake. Oh the joys of apartment living. Something we hadn’t experienced in about 4 years.

This may not be as delicious sounding to you as it is to me, but I stayed in my pajamas until noon. This has only happened 2 times in the past few years and both times were the result of a D&C. The King and I laid around on the couch and watched TV. Eventually The King got in the showered and I unpacked three boxes (three down, fifteen to go).

We had a few things to buy, so we headed outside to see if we could find a store to buy them in (because I didn’t want to drive to IKEA and deal with the Saturday IKEA crowd). All I can say is, living in downtown rocks my world. We walked to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to buy a new utensil case for our kitchen drawer, Macy’s to look for some new maternity clothes (still all too big for me), and bought a new battery for our phone at Office Depot.

In between all of the glorious shopping we walked to the library and hung out for a while reading book on our upcoming trip to Europe (which we leave for in a week and a half!). We also got some yummy hot cocoa to keep our little fingers warm.

We had some lunch and decided it was time to go back home. No getting our car out of the parking garage and driving back to our house. No, we just simply walked a few blocks to our fabulous apartment. I felt like we were just staying in an hotel. It was very odd. But very cool.

This is good for The King, as his dream is to live in a hotel, just like Dylan McKay.

Now if we could just figure out a way to have the maid service bring up fresh towels and mints everyday, then we’d be set.

Holy crap. Were we seperated at birth? I swear to you that I could write a whole post identical to yours. Down to the Ikea and chocolate! Weird, very weird.

That sounds very fun. Except I am not over the fact that you have only stayed in your pajamas twice in the last 4 years. Boy, am I majorly lazy.

Chicago is a great city for doing the “touristy stuff”, and in summer my husband & I do those sort of activities all the time. It really gives me a different perspective, but then again I’ve only lived here one year so Chicago still has that “newness factor” for me.
